Birding with friend and author Ursula Vernon in southern Arizona, we finally encountered a (the) Elegant Trogon in Madera Canyon after a couple previous attempts that same trip. In this video, the bird has caught a spiny caterpillar, which it proceeds to bash on a branch (presumably to remove some of the spines) before eating. Jeff and Ursula provide commentary.

Recorded 17 March, 2018 on the trail below the Whitehouse picnic area. Traffic noises are from the (surprisingly busy) S Madera Canyon Road, out of sight, but not out of hearing behind us. Video and onboard audio recorded on a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200. Thanks to Jeff for assistance with audio cleanup & balancing!
