Black-backed Woodpecker, Rockwood Lodge, MN, Feb. 8 2023

Black-backed woodpecker (Picoides arcticus) that visited our cabin at the Rockwood Lodge on the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota (edge of Poplar Lake and the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness). This is a boreal species that we don't regularly see when we're up in the area. Not great video, but still notable for us. The all-black head (lack of yellow on forehead) makes this a female.

She started out near the cabin bird feeder (though didn't visit the feeder, that we saw) and worked up the hill to the dead spruce that you see her working in these video clips.
