Huge backing plate for our new bow roller: DIY Boat Refit Progress 6

time7 mo agoview1 views

In this episode we are building the "foundations" for our new Bow Roller, this is larger so that our 30kg SPADE anchor can be stored on it. In the process we are upgrading small backing plates from plywood and thin stainless steel to FR4 (high density, fireproof Epoxy and Fibreglass boards) bedded on thickened epoxy.

We are refitting a 44 year old Rival 38 for a Sustainable Sailing retirement in a few years. Two years ago, when we bought Vida she was in a very tired and damp condition with all original equipment and fittings. We have removed all the gas, diesel and paraffin equipment, and are installing all electric (motor, cooking etc). Now that the inside is dry (thanks to new windows, new hatches and leak chasing) we are fitting her out for live-aboard world cruising.
