Metropolis - Sheep Shearing in Spain

time2 mo agoview11 views

Report by Alvaro Alvarez, Metropolis’ correspondent in the UK and in Spain, edit by Suzanne.

Since a couple of years, there has been a shortage of sheep shearers in Spain. It’s because many people are leaving the countryside and not many people are interested in learning agricultural skills. For some years already, Spain has been bringing people from Uruguay to fix that problem. The Uruguayos come for two or three months at a time, and they are very sought after because they are very skilled. The number of people is increasing every year. The Uruguayos are not missing an opportunity to work in Uruguay, because it’s autumn there when it’s springtime in Spain, so they can benefit from a double shearing season.
