I'm a good way through creating a large soup ladle from a piece of firewood I saved. It was Yellow Birch and one end of the piece was severely splayed wider and curved and appeared to me as a perfect piece to make into a large soup ladle. I've used a heavy curved gouge to rough put the bowl and will finish the rest with a fine spoon blade hand carving tool.
