I was fortunate to spend a morning pulling tubes with Amber Mans, Skye Xollo, and Daniella Thach as a visiting artist at UW, Madison. Considered by many to be the first University hot glass program in the US, I always enjoy visiting. These students were super talented, and I had a wonderful time blowing glass with them. We all got some tubes in colors that cannot be normally bought and I am grateful for the tubes they pulled for me.
I plan on taking these tubes back to Brooklyn later this month and (eventually) coating them with phosphor powder to enhance their color and brightness. The colored glass acts as a filter, greatly intensifying the color and making it hold up to direct sunlight. You cannot however get a color out of a filter that isn't being generated in the first place- hence the use for phosphor.
Excited to see where these students go in their careers- they are all getting into really exciting things at UW!
