Is the Fediverse the answer for the social media of the future, putting public values first?
Social media – as many people know and use them – are at odds with public values. Yet many organisations still feel compelled to use these social media to reach their audience.
In this session, with a number of public broadcasters, we’ll discuss the problems with centralised commercial media platforms such as Twitter, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube. We’ll then look at how the Fediverse could provide solutions. What are the possibilities offered by decentralised, non-commercial social media, operating on the basis of public values such as openness, transparency and autonomy? What experiments can we set up to investigate this? What organisations are already working on it and what can we learn from them? Is the Fediverse the answer for the social media of the future, putting public values first?
Tip: This session combines well with the Fediverse storytelling session on day 1.
