How can you connect with your audience without Big Tech?
Public service broadcasters have a legal obligation to reach and engage a minimum number of viewers or listeners. At present, they often still do this via the social media provided by Big Tech. Yet this conflicts with the basis of their mandate: to guarantee compliance with public values in the media. How can a current affairs programme criticise data capitalism if it has no choice but to use tools that data capitalism controls? In this session we discuss with Geert-Jan Bogaerts (VPRO) and Ian Forrester (BBC) whether public broadcasters can find a different way to reach their audiences. We ask critical thinker Eli Pariser (new_public) what is needed to develop technology and media that serve the public and democracy.
