On July 19, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel’s occupation of Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem is illegal and must end immediately.Palestinians, of course, have been saying this for decades. The ICJ also called for a halt to new settlement construction, the evacuation of settlers, and reparations to Palestinians, labeling some of Israel’s policies as “apartheid.” This advisory opinion, requested by the United Nations, significantly condemns Israel’s legal defenses and emphasizes the need for international accountability and policy shifts.
