Classical music for the heart and intellect. 'Soledad Nórdica is a classical art song composition by contemporary classical composer Poul Udbye Pock-Steen.based on Spanish dance songs and early flamenco compilations. The work is part of the classical song cycle 'Mirror of the Sun' and consists of three separate pieces:

SEGUIDILLA is popular song from the Spanish region La Mancha, compiled by the Spanish musicologist and composer Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, and arranged by Poul Udbye Pock-Steen. INTERMEZZO and SOLEDAD NÓRDICA are both composed by Poul Udbye Pock-Steen. The lyrics are based on popular flamenco traditions. The songs are performed live by Danish ensemble Via Artis Konsort.

MIRROR OF THE SUN The song belongs to a cycle of classical art songs for chamber ensemble titled 'Mirror of the Sun' [Danish title 'Solens spejl'], with lyrics by the Danish 19th century poet Hans Christian Andersen and music by different composers. The songs were recorded live at Nyvangskirken Kalundborg, Denmark.

The music is composed and arranged for an rare setup of instruments: piano, marimba, romantic guitar, early flamenco guitar, clarinet, gaita (Spanish folk music instrument) and viola da gamba. The songs are sung by two classical singers and a singer who uses singing techniques from world music genres.

Most of the songs from 'Mirror of the Sun' are based on a series of quasi-modernist and sensual poems written by Hans Christian Andersen during his journey to Spain in 1862. The poems exhibit a number of strong contrasts; South-North, passion-sobriety, sensuality-abstinence, youth-old age, nationalism-global outlook, Protestantism-Catholicism, life-death, etc. The poems stand out significantly from the rest of Andersen's poetry, and are, in many ways, ahead of their time, both in form and content. However, the poems did not arouse great enthusiasm in Denmark at the time; they were simply considered too daring.
