Landing at Midway Airport – America's Most Dangerous Airport

time5 months agoview0 views

Southwest Airlines Flight 1248 experienced a catastrophic landing at Chicago's Midway International Airport during heavy snowfall. The Boeing 737 skidded off the runway due to challenging conditions: strong tailwinds, reduced visibility, and critical operational failures. Landing on runway 31C with an eight-knot tailwind, the plane overran the short 6,522-foot runway, crossing into a busy intersection. The tragic incident resulted in a six-year-old child's fatality, with nine people injured on the ground and seven passengers wounded. The National Transportation Safety Board investigated and found multiple contributing factors, including improper pilot training, inadequate landing distance calculations, and delayed thrust reverser deployment. In response, Midway became the first U.S. airport to install Engineered Material Arresting Systems (EMAS) and the FAA implemented the Takeoff and Landing Performance Assessment (TALPA) protocol to prevent similar incidents in the future.
