In the spring of 1936 there was great news in Amsterdam Zoo, Natura Artis Magistra. For the first time ever in the Zoo’s history a gorilla was on display. His name was Jaap, or more affectionately Japie. He was sourced from the wild in Cameroon.
Here you see Japie when given a bath, in 1938.
