While some people might be comfortable just loading into a BBS and Usenetting a bunch of tv shows and movies on to their iOmega Zip Disks, the convenience factor of streaming services makes them wildly popular. Unfortunately, you can't always be sure that shows and movies will stay on a streaming service. Not only do companies remove stuff frequently but they will also remove items you have specifically paid for to "purchase". PlayOn hooks into the streaming services you have legal access to - both paid and free - and either locally or remotely records them and allows you access to download regular video files that you can archive and integrate into your home media setup with ease.

PlayOn Home is $4.99 per month (But not really since you can only buy 3 month or year long subscriptions) and lets you record an unlimited amount of shows and movies directly to your computer. PlayOn Cloud lets PlayOn remotely record the shows (On a monthly set fee w/ limited recordings or a pay-as-you-go credit system) that you can download (To your phone via their app).

PlayOn Home is my choice, even if that just means once a year you buy a short subscription and just let your computer rip everything it can while your sub is active.
