On April 17, students, professors, and other protesters set up the “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” on the Columbia University campus in New York City. Over 100+ demonstrators were arrested by the NYPD at the behest of the university.
The latest protests are part of a sustained movement by students and campus groups to pressure the university to divest from companies that profit off Israeli occupation & apartheid. Columbia University has cracked down on pro-Palestine protests on campus for months, even barring groups like Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP).
Despite the university’s efforts to quash the student-led protests, the Gaza Solidarity Encampment has remained active as of Friday, April 19.
