Butterfly, Flowers, Sunshine: Fire-rim Tortoiseshell + Marsh Marigold

time2 mo agoview3 views

I've seen this species of butterfly Aglais milberti Fire-rim Tortoise Shell for a few weeks already, this year, but this is the first time I've seen it on flowers this season. Up till now I only saw them flying low in dry grassy areas. Interestingly, they appeared much smaller on those previous sightings as they did not have their fore-wings spread out as much as in this view! Here it is enjoying the Calth palustris Marsh Marigold (not related to garden marigolds, these are cousins to buttercups) which are beginning to flower in notable numbers, but will become larger, more floriferous and more numerous over the coming weeks.
