Building the Paper House (Eddie Biggins)
“Some things take time,” he said As he rolled a Herald rotogravure And I asked, “Do you know if this’ll work?” He quietly replied, “I’m not sure.” Then he pulled last week’s edition from the pile upon the floor And laughed, “If it all comes crashing down, Maybe I’ll have learned something that I didn’t know before.”
It takes patience and care
Layer upon layer
A strong aching need
And the will to succeed
A belief in your dreams
In your craziest schemes
When you’re building the paper house
For twenty years he had worked Pasting page upon page to the wall There in his weary, sparkling eyes I could see how proud he was of it all From the desk made out of articles on Colonel Lindbergh’s flight To the plain, less extraordinary news Every wall and piece of furniture Brought obvious delight
It takes patience and care…
I shook his hand and said goodbye Taking one more look at the headline histories past But I couldn’t help but wonder how long Would it last?
Now more than fifty years on His experiment is standing there still It has withstood both weather and time As a testament to one dream fulfilled If only I could have that kind of faith in my ideals And the strength in my heart to see them through Maybe someday I’ll know how That kind of satisfaction feels.
It takes patience and care…
