Breaking out of fast ice anchorage. Davis station, Antarctica

time3 mo agoview41 views

A short timelapse of RSV Aurora Australis leaving the fast ice anchorage at Davis Station in November 2008. Assembled from many images collected with a Nikon D200 on a tripod strapped to the ship rail.

First she has to make herself a turning circle, so lots of backing up, turning, ramming to break open a small harbour in landfast sea ice. And then leaving via the entry channel made some days beforehand. The entry channel is full of ice rubble and has started to refreeze - however it is a lot faster going out than breaking in!
