AxWax - Werk It (DAWless Electro Jam ft. Moog Werkstatt, Elektron Model:Samples, Teensy & DSP FX)

My second Teensy experiment, as well as a first test drive of a cheap DSP Effects unit from AliExpress. Plus a quick jam to showcase both in context. As my voice is very quiet and hard to understand at times I recommend turning on subtitles.

Setup:

The JP-8000's serial MIDI out goes into the Teensy, which has the Arturia Beatstep connected to its MIDI host port (which also powers it). The Werkstatt and Model:Samples are both connected to the Beatstep via CV/gate and serial MIDI, respectively. The TD-3 and my PT2399 delay are connected to the Model:Samples via serial MIDI (and a MIDI through box). The Werkstatt's audio out goes through a

Background:

  1. I recently bought myself a Korg SQ-1, mostly as a MIDI to CV interface for my Korg M-10, which works nicely, but only when using my PC as a MIDI hub to translate between my "oldskool" serial MIDI gear (with 5-pin DIN connectors) and the SQ-1 (which only has a USB MIDI in).

As I had an unused Teensy 3.6 (which can act as a USB host device) in my drawer I cobbled together a serial MIDI to USB MIDI host interface. Sadly I couldn't get the SQ-1 to receive any MIDI commands, despite it being enumerated correctly by the Teensy.

To troubleshoot (and as the next best thing) I instead connected my Arturia Beatstep (which also only has USB MIDI in) to the Teensy, which works perfectly as a serial to USB host converter.

So while I still can't send arpeggios to my MS-10 DAWlessly, I can now at least do so with my Moog Werkstatt!

  1. I purchased a so-called "100 Kinds Effects DSP Digital Reverb Module DC 5V Karaoke Reverberation Mixer Effect Board" on AliExpress a little while ago and finally got round to wire it up and try it out.

So far I haven't done anything fancy to it - I simply hooked up some jack sockets and a power supply. It works great, but the effects are 100% wet, so the reverb and delay effects need to be used as send effects, rather than as inserts.

Resources:

There is some interesting projects online (especially by the excellent Juanito Moore) that add wet/dry pots to the FX unit, as well as feedback and CV control for the delay time, which I might attempt some time in the near future. For now here's a few useful links:
