Oh, what a visual treat of a game angelgaze is! The backgrounds we explore are beautiful as well as the animations and also the huge character portraits, and they all have that EGA colorscheme with incredible dithering to them that screams retro right in your face and together with the (optional) coded in scanlines that is a sure trip back to the 80s and I love that! Is it just me or does Kian look like a young John Travolta? Would fit the retro vibe... The music is no mere NES bleeps but filled with drama and tension and really fitting orchestral music. Later in the homezone of the secret base it gets really groovy and moody that is also great. And youtube is quick to point out that the music is copyrighted... The soundeffects and ambient sounds when no music plays are also spot on. The story is really catching and filled with interesting Science Fiction ideas about VR and a secret agency doing their thing in a secret base and we are just getting in on it. The game's page on itch hints at even more 80 scifi themes like giant computers and space vixes from outer space and a giant conspiracy and some more so this video just scrapes the surface of what is to come. The game is still work in progress mind you, so check it out and try it yourself and help retrokiss with bug reports and the like. And now we come to the downside for me, that is the gameplay, it is mainly loads of talking (and for that reading dialog that explains the story some more), some not so interesting but for that hard puzzles. It took me ages to pixelhunt that ring the girl lost for the very first thing you need to do in the game. Well, to be precise, it took me ages to even consider helping her by pixelhunting and not just exploring further into the desert... but the very first puzzle is a pixelhunt, that is underwhelming. Maybe some clever dialog puzzle would have worked better. Or she has something magnetic on her and convincing her to give it to you is hard but doable. Or or or, everything is possible in a dream. Hey retrokiss, I hope you read this and consider :) After some more long dialog that explains the backstory the next puzzle is finding the suitcase, I see there are security cautions for this operation, but we are in a secret base already, that was very unexpected. And then after a lot of more text we are reading a manual, that is vaguely interesting in a scifi game but then going back and finding the 3 things of interest in the manual was too much for me, I lost interest then... but I get what the game is doing, it is just not for me it seems, but I really want to showcase this beautiful game, so here we go, if you want to know how the story continues you have to find out by playing :)

Synopsis: Angelgaze is an upcoming pixel art point-and-click adventure bearing the distinctive retro look of the garish EGA 16 color palette of the PC MSDOS era and aiming for a very "synthwave"-ish vibe. It tries to recreate the mood of some 80s cult classics (Back to the Future, Otherworld, V, Scanners, Automan, Knight Rider) and even some 70s ones like Andromeda Strain.
It is born from a one man (for now) team's nostalgia for 80s and 90s vibes - fashion, color themes, hairstyles, and the objects we have lost to time such as tape cassette players, vintage computers, slide projectors. And of course the mythical Sierra and Lucas Arts adventure games.
The game is heavily inspired by The Dig, Loom, Zak McKracken, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, King's Quest, Space Quest, Codename: Iceman, Leisure Suit Larry etc.
