Lepus americanus the Snowshoe Hare is -at times- a very common critter here in the Boreal Mixed Wood zone, and over quite a wide swathe of North America. I don't actually see the hares that often, though at times in summer, especially early in the season, I will see one hanging around in the yard. Rarely I've had one that wanted to eat early spring garden flowers- disappointing when they are so long awaited! Most years though, they are more interested in eating grass/dandelions etc in the mowed areas! I also see them at times dashing off through the undergrowth. A couple of times I've seen them in spring when they still had some of the winter white, but I don't think I've ever seen one- and definitely not photographed one- in full white winter coat. However, when populations are high ( they go through dramatic swings up and down) as they had been for quite a few years, I see the tracks everywhere once the snow falls. The last couple of winters I've only seen the tracks a couple of times, so I was glad to see this trail, yesterday!
