Woodpecker vs Squirrel: Quarrel?

time2 yr agoview1 views

A little nature drama in the forest, from September 2022, on the acreage. Woodpeckers don't cause any trouble for squirrels, as far as I know, but squirrels do need to watch some other large birds (besides, obviously, predators): corvids such as crows, magpies and jays could go after the squirrels' young. Red Squirrels Tamiasciurius hudsonicus are very territorial anyway, and will raise a fuss when anyone (exception maybe for small songbirds) enters their territory. Pileated Woodpeckers Dryocopus pileatus apparently can compete with squirrels for food, but that is unlikely in this case (the woodpecker was presumably excavating for ants at the tree base, not consuming fruit/nuts/seeds that would be of interest to the squirrel).
