I'm self-isolating like everybody else these days because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so I've been thinking a lot about cycling during times like this, and I'm reminded of cases in the past where bikes were seen as an important tool during disasters: Christchurch after the earthquake, New York after hurricane Sandy. I've even seen it myself, during the Calgary floods of 2013, when my bike took me places in a shuttered city that nothing else could.
No matter where you are these days, please heed the advice of the medical experts in your community to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Stay home, but stay healthy. Don't ride if you're being asked not to, but if you can still get out on a bike, enjoy it -- it will make your day!
I wrote the original magazine story this video is based on for Canadian Cycling back in the spring of 2016 if you want to check it out.
Footage in this video is from Daniel Szesniak, Channel 4 News and Global Calgary.
