This is one of what might be described as a whole genre of songs about how a guy commits crimes and gets arrested and sent off to Australia and blames his girlfriend for all of it. The origins of this song go back to the 1600s and is claimed independently as coming from the American Tradition, the Irish folk tradition, and the English -- the Welsh and Scots also probably claim it. In that way it is a lot like The Black Velvet Band which we also play (and which is another in which the busted criminal blames his girlfriend).
