Many small mistakes, but overall a decent run. The pirate fights could have been better, particularly the last one, but a perfect Carla and perfect catacombs were enough to keep the run alive.
Played on Linux using Wine 10.5.
In case they help other speedrunners, here are some comments about the run:
- 00:23 At least on my computer, clicking with the mouse right after a screen transition fails more often than not, so I press Tab (which is equivalent to a right click) instead. However, right-clicking (or pressing Tab) on the curtain does nothing, so it's better to press Tab when the cursor is somewhere else and then click on the curtain after Guybrush has started walking. I forgot to do so at 19:17, though.
- 01:05 You can hear the sound of the cook closing the door right before Guybrush leaves the bar. I didn't hear it, though, and thought the door was going to be open when going back there at 19:09.
- 03:37 I'm usually inconsistent at walking to the Voodoo Lady's, but this time it was hilarious.
- 03:50 The schmoovement here reduces the chances of Fester talking right as you enter the jailhouse.
- 09:22 Pressed Tab too soon. In the original game, you can just hold Enter here (and in many other places), but you can't do so in the Special Edition.
- 11:15 During the insult fights, I write down all the insults and answers I get. This way it's easy to know the position of every insult/answer before the list of insults/answers shows up.
- 14:56 Saving during insult fights is a gamble; I usually do it if I'm ready to go to Carla's. Here saving and reloading took 26 seconds, which is a lot but it's still faster than losing the fight.
- 17:40 The reason I don't split during the run is that I play the game in fullscreen mode and I don't see the timer. I use a stopwatch to know whether I should restart after fighting Carla (here I was only 35 seconds behind my previous personal best, so I kept going), but during the rest of the run I've no idea of what my pace is until I finish.
- 19:16 Selecting the second mug in order to use it with the first one is better than using the first mug with the second one. The reason is that the inventory automatically scrolls to the top when using the first mug with the second one.
- 19:19 This is a risky strategy. This is the only place where you can use the mugs and still move optimally. However, using them here means you barely have time to get to the lock before the mug melts. That's why I wait for the screen to scroll a bit before using them.
- 20:50 In this version it would probably be faster to wait for the fourth digit of the combination. This way you could start walking right after introducing the last digit. This would save time because Guybrush would keep walking while saying "There's nothing in here but this note". I forgot to do so out of habit.
- 28:53 Out of the many "I don't see anything special about it" you'll hear during this run, this is the one of the few done on purpose. Guybrush also talks if you click on the nozzle, and it's easier to use the inventory if you right-click (or press Tab) on it.
- 29:37 I've missed the Herman skip many times because sometimes Guybrush simply doesn't read the compass when you click on it. I had the (unconfirmed) theory that reading the compass before getting there increases the chances of Guybrush reading it when it matters. Since doing this run, I've found that it might be more consistent (also unconfirmed) to hold Tab to read the compass instead of pressing Enter or clicking on it.
- 30:18 The best way I know to do this part is pressing "U", clicking on the gunpowder, clicking on the dam, pressing "U" and clicking on the lens, opening the inventory once again in order to select the rope (without clicking on it), and manually closing the inventory. All this while Guybrush is still walking. Since I didn't do it in time, the inventory scrolled to the top after using the gunpowder and I had to manually scroll it to the bottom and select the rope after using the lens.
- 30:39 If you did the Herman skip at the river fork, you need to talk to Herman here or he won't show up at the village when you get the banana picker. Looking at the jungle causes Herman to come.
- 31:47 I've tried a hundred times, and I've never managed to enter the village with the optimal movement you can do in the original game.
- 33:34 It's possible to walk back from the giant monkey head much faster, but I don't know how to do it in a consistent way.
- 35:14 Looking at Herman skips Herman's line. It's also possible to give him the banana picker before he talks even without looking at him, but I've only managed to do so a couple of times during practice sessions.
- 36:57 My first (pretty much) perfect catacombs in this game!
- 36:59 My intention was to position the cursor a bit more to the left so Guybrush gets to the ledge faster.
- 38:32 Accidentally hit "U" too early. Walking to the dish before pressing "U" is faster.
- 38:58 I buffer "look at" and start spam-clicking with the mouse because holding Tab could result in Guybrush looking at the glowing crate twice. When that happens, Guybrush is still talking when he reaches the entrance of the passage, and doesn't enter the passage until he finishes talking.
