The Secret of Monkey Island in 24:45

time2 mo agoview35 views

Mediocre first two trials, and the pirates could have been a lot better. After that, everything went great, with only a few minor mistakes (that ladder in part two...).

Played on ScummVM 2.9.1 using 102545962 as random seed.

In case they help other speedrunners, here are some comments about the run. Credit to people like LeoLitz, frozenspade, zergu or hyperformance for finding most of these things.

  1. 00:06 Skipped the logo earlier than intended, but luckily still got the speed glitch.
  2. 00:54 In some cutscenes I hold Enter and click both mouse buttons in order to start walking immediately after skipping the cutscene. Not sure whether it's the fastest method, and in the cutscenes where getting the timing is easy, it's better to press Esc once while clicking with the mouse.
  3. 01:07 Re-activating screen snap immediately after getting to the lookout point makes some screens easier. It isn't clear whether it's faster.
  4. 02:29 I don't have a consistent setup to walk to the Voodoo Lady's and every run I get a surprise.
  5. 02:37 Skipping Guybrush's little dance is tricky and I miss it about 75% of the time because I don't know the proper timing. Here it went well.
  6. 02:43 Opening the store door in advance is particularly funny when a random pirate closes it.
  7. 02:58 When I made this run, I didn't know you could check the "Return to launcher when leaving a game" in ScummVM. Checking this option and quitting the game is faster than opening the global menu.
  8. 03:15 A few times during the run I move the cursor outside the game window in order to be able to position it on the right answer. Here I botched it, though.
  9. 03:28 Possibly a bug in ScummVM. After loading the savestate, the game still uses screen snap until you restart the game or hit ctrl+r twice. That's why I don't switch back to screen scroll during the rest of the run.
  10. 03:46 During this cutscene I usually type the shortcut to trap the mouse cursor, but this time I forgot and lost time during the sequence that followed.
  11. 04:43 The idea was to open the cake right before entering the mansion, and here I realized I'd forgotten. A couple of imprecisions came immediately after that.
  12. 07:33 You should think about which keys you have to press to start the fight while the previous fight is ending. I forgot to do so and I almost pressed 4 out of habit.
  13. 08:14 Here I was 14 seconds behind my previous personal best. So, if you're watching this video hoping to learn something, feel free to ignore everything up to this point :). You can check my three trials personal best for a better example.
  14. 09:24 A good Carla can fix almost any run.
  15. 09:29 Clicking on a very specific spot on the way back from Carla would have been slightly faster. I don't go for it, though, because you barely have enough time to position the cursor there before fighting Carla.
  16. 11:00 Activating screen scroll to walk to the cliffside is faster, but due to the possible bug mentioned earlier you have to press ctrl+r twice in a row, and I find that too hard.
  17. 11:58 Clicking on the cable during that specific frame makes Guybrush get there 0.4 seconds faster. This was the first time I hit it during a run.
  18. 12:37 My intention was to give the note a bit earlier. Haven't checked whether what I ended up doing was better or worse.
  19. 14:25 I aim to have the cereal at either position 4 or position 5 because, given my keyboard shortcuts, quickly typing "Use", then "6" and then "Use" again is hard.
  20. 16:07 Clicking on the sun once at the exact time is faster, but I hold Enter because it's easier and only loses a couple of frames.
  21. 16:25 This is exclusive to the VGA floppy disk version: if you enter the crack at the right spot, Guybrush will be at the ideal position after teleporting to the beach.
  22. 17:13 As far as I know, this is the best pixel to position the cursor when entering the village.
  23. 17:16 To get this movement, you have to click on the left of the screen at the right time.
  24. 17:54 While the monkey is eating the bananas, I hold "G" until the verb "Walk to" changes to "Give". Might not be the fastest method, but it reduces the chances of accidentally walking to the monkey.
  25. 18:23 Clicking on that area is what makes it easier for me to move to the giant monkey head optimally. I still don't get it right every time, though (for instance, I missed it at 20:05).
  26. 20:32 When using screen snap, the "mushrooms in hell" cutscene starts when the screen snaps. It's important to skip it quickly and immediately start walking to the right again, or Guybrush will keep walking back.
  27. 20:36 As far as I know, taking out the head at that specific point does not save time. It doesn't lose time either, so I still do it just in case :D.
  28. 21:02 This is a frame-perfect trick that I miss very often. To make it a bit easier, hold "U" before entering the screen, and press "5" more or less when you notice the screen is changing.
  29. 23:08 This was the first time I forgot to right-click on the door LOL.
  30. 23:26 I used to use the keyboard for the last answer of this conversation, but now I click anywhere with the mouse, which I think is a bit easier.
  31. 23:36 During the cutscene, I make the window of another program the active one. That window contains a reference of where the cursor should be.
  32. 23:46 If done properly (which I didn't), picking up the root beer is as fast or even faster than using it without picking it up. It also gives you more time to move the cursor to LeChuck's position, and reduces the chances of accidentally moving the cursor before clicking on the root beer.
