The limits of normal: Standard Time talk show S1E10

time1 yr agoview8 views

Often at the margins of conversation, people with disabilities remind us about our very notions of normalcy and our limited sensibility for differences, simply by advocating for more inclusive and accessible ways of living. Though having disabilities is part of the human condition, the ones affected continue to struggle with self-determination and having agency over their lives in a world that struggles to understand them. What even is normal?

Guests: Bernadette Feuerstein is an Austrian disability rights activist and public official, known for her significant contributions to disability rights. She has been playing an important part in the Austrian disability movement, including her involvement in creating a barrier-free Austrian documentary on the topic. She is also the chairwoman of Selbstbestimmt Leben Österreich (Self-Determined Living Austria).

Walter Mathes is an actor, art therapist, and cartoonist. He is a community worker and theatre trainer and has worked with people with special needs, addictions, and in penitentiary facilities.

Maria Dinold works on the integration of people with and without disabilities into cultural life and to promote social inclusion through artistic activity. Is a deputy chairperson of "Ich Bin O.K." Association. She’s the President of both the Austrian branch and the European Federation of Adapted Physical Activity.

We meet with them at the Alte Schmiede Kunstverein, Vienna.
