The San Francisco Volcanic Field is a stunning, geologically rich region in northern Arizona, stretching across 1.8 million acres and home to over 600 volcanoes, from ancient lava domes to fresh looking cinder cones. It surrounds Flagstaff and the San Francisco Peaks, with Humphreys Peak Arizona’s tallest mountain formed from a long extinct stratovolcano. The field has been active for six million years, with the most recent eruption at Sunset Crater around 1085 CE, meaning it’s considered dormant, not extinct.
