Nine days before leaving office, Trump put Cuba on the State Sponsors of Terrorism List list over its support for peace processes with armed groups in Colombia.
In Havana Friday, the Colombian government and the ELN (National Liberation Army) signed a historic six-month ceasefire agreement to close out a third round of peace talks, a major step for peace in the country with the longest-running armed conflict in the Western Hemisphere.
Colombian president Gustavo Petro, who flew to Havana to sign the accords, praised the landmark deal, and said of Cuba’s contribution to the process:
"Undoubtedly, I have to thank Cuba…which has accompanied us for decades so that we don’t kill one another…I told President Biden that [putting Cuba on the State Sponsors of Terrorism list] was a profound injustice…a stab in the back…that must be rectified.”
