Back to the roots, baby. The Oldskool Demo compo is where bits are tight, cycles are counted, and every effect is a badge of honor. This is a love letter to the machines that shaped the demoscene โ from flickering CRTs to buzzing SID chips.
๐พ What is it? This compo is for demo productions running on vintage platforms โ think 8-bit and 16-bit legends like the C64, Amiga, Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, and more. Itโs about real hardware, real limits, and really awesome demos.
๐งฎ Accepted Platforms (examples):
- Commodore 64 / 128
- Commodore Amiga (OCS/ECS/AGA)
- Atari ST / STe
- MS-DOS PCs (8086/286/386 era)
- ZX Spectrum / Spectrum Next
- MSX, Apple II, VIC-20, BBC Micro, and others by prior arrangement
- If it's got a soul and runs on retro iron, it belongs here.
๐ Rules:
- Must run on original hardware or faithful emulation (VICE, WinUAE, Hatari, DOSBox, etc.).
- Provide clear instructions and, if possible, a capture video for backup purposes.
- Your demo must be self-contained โ no external files beyond the release unless pre-approved.
- No illegal memory use or hacks that would crash real hardware.
- Size limits are flexible, but this is a demo compo โ if youโre doing a size-restricted production, consider the intro categories.
๐ ๏ธ Style Points:
- Bring on the copperbars, bobs, twisters, and SID wizardry.
- Period-correct audio and graphics will win hearts.
- Daring code hacks, sync effects, and transitions get the crowd roaring.
- Donโt be afraid to innovate within the constraints โ thatโs the scene way.
๐ Why Enter? This is the compo that keeps the flame alive. The Oldskool Demo is a celebration of technical mastery, authenticity, and the timeless art of making magic on machines older than some of the audience. Show โem what your retro rig can do โ and earn your place in scene history.
