Plastic (2021)

The COVID-19 pandemic made the first few years of the 2020s a strange time. "Plastic" seeks to comment on how the changes we made to our lives to protect our communities had the side effect of making social interactions stilted and weird, alienated from what we are used to.

I created the plastic suit by tying together nearly 1,000 plastic food handling gloves, which are similar to the ones many people used to protect themselves at the start of the pandemic. I wore the suit out to a strip mall and acted as if this was normal, to capture authentic reactions from other shoppers. I had never done a performance in public before, so this was well out of my comfort zone. I think it was well worth it, as the reactions from strangers really solidified the concept of the piece in an interesting and dynamic way.
