The clouds cast changing shadows across stubbly farm fields on this bright but frigid winter afternoon. At this location the tracks make a wide curve to cross and then follow Providence Coulee on the downhill grade toward Pasco, Washington. The distinctive sound of dynamic braking from the rear locomotives indicates that the engineer is using the regenerative properties of the locomotive traction motors to keep the speed under control. Even so, the train is gradually accelerating on its way west.
