I’ve talked about ethics on my channel before and how that influences and guides everything I do here. I’ve struggled with the proper actions to take, in regards to the my channel, to show public support and solidarity with the protests against the murders of Black people by police and white supremacists and systemic racism as a whole. The fact that there needs to be a protest for actions to be taken against the police after they time and time again show that they cannot be trusted to actively protect all citizens really says it all about the current state of affairs in the United States. I’ve struggled with what to do because a lot of the statements of support and solidarity on social media by people that look like me, white people, have felt so performative and empty. I didn’t want to contribute to that noise so I chose to listen, something that all white people need to do right now. But it’s not enough to listen. After listening you have to think and learn from what you heard. You need to educate yourself and let that education influence your everyday actions. I worry that this educational process though will slowly evaporate from white people’s consciousness as the news cycle changes and they realize that there is not a quick fix; that institutional racism has a history that goes back centuries. So I’ve decided that the least I can do in my small corner is begin each video highlighting an organization or fundraiser working against systemic racism, speak about what they do and make a donation. I will pin the donation link as the top comment so that others can choose to donate if they are able. I will continue this for the foreseeable future to keep it as a conversation point. I would love to see other creators do the same or something similar rather than a singular, one time action. This doesn’t end after white people feel better or when the news cycle changes direction. It will take hard work from every single person and this is a small piece of what I will do as part of my work to be an antiracist.
