content warning: this song includes recorded sound bytes from mitt romney and todd akin on abortion and sexual assault. picture it: october 2012. i was in my senior year of college in a recording tech class. i was the only woman in my major, and as a result the class. we were given an assignment to create a composition that integrated speech recordings. we had to take the recordings and make them blend with the music. most people chose poems or inspiring speeches. i presented this noisy, gritty, upsetting composition featuring mitt romney's comments on abortion and the upcoming presidential election. todd akin had just released his disgusting comments on women's bodies in the event of an assault and i included them. we presented the projects via listening sessions and then we'd do group critiques. i've never seen a more uncomfortable group of people in my life and we quickly moved on to the next project but it was extremely satisfying to present. this was before me too and that semester there had been so many assaults on campus that were basically being ignored and in that moment the topic could not be ignored in that classroom. i'd been thinking about this project since last friday when roe v. wade was struck down and i finally found it on my old college flash drive.
