A linear power supply of the stand-by type, used in alarm and video monitoring systems. The LM317 in a typical voltage regulator configuration, a current limiting resistor and discharge diode for the battery, and some state indication - that's all! A very simple and nice module.

Sorry for the abysmal lighting here and camera losing focus all the time. It's out-of-the-lab field setting where I have to improvise a lot more than I normally do.
