Juan Son, born Juan Carlos Pereda Velasco on January 24, 1984, in Guadalajara, Mexico, is a multifaceted singer, composer, and experimental musician known for his innovative contributions to Latin alternative music.

🎤 Early Life & Musical Beginnings
Juan’s musical journey began early; after moving to Texas at age five, he sang in a church choir, took piano lessons, and started composing songs by eleven. At seventeen, he formed his first band, Nouveau, marking his initial foray into performance. He later studied at the London Center of Contemporary Music, where he collaborated with international artists before returning to Mexico.

🎸 Rise with Porter
In 2004, Juan became the lead vocalist for Porter, a Mexican alternative rock band. Their EP Donde los ponys pastan (2005) and album Atemahawke (2007) were pivotal in the indie rock scene, with the latter reaching 4th place in the top 100 charts and remaining for 30 weeks. Juan’s distinctive vocals and songwriting were central to the band’s success.

🌊 Solo Career & Experimental Ventures
After departing Porter in 2008 due to creative differences, Juan embarked on a solo career. His debut album, Mermaid Sashimi (2009), showcased his experimental style, blending sound sampling, multilingual lyrics, and vocal effects to create an ethereal soundscape. The album earned him a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Song for “Nada.”  
In 2011, he collaborated with Simone Pace of Blonde Redhead under the name AEIOU, releasing Space Hymns, further exploring experimental sounds.

🌀 Recent Projects & Collaborations
Juan continued to evolve artistically, releasing singles like “Siento” (2018) and “Montaña” (2019). In 2016, he released the album 7 under the pseudonym “7.” His recent collaborations include “Laberinto” (2024) with Luis Humberto Navejas of Enjambre and “Amor Maicero” (2024) with Transgresorcorruptor. These tracks are part of his upcoming album Fábulas del nuevo mundo.
