What are the conditions of the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of scientists as advocates for nuclear peace? This talk starts to answer the question through a detailed examination of Niels Bohr's effort to get the US and UK to make a diplomatic overture to the Soviet Union prior to dropping the first atomic bombs on Japan. The talk will end by offering some tentative lessons from the nuclear case to the current scientists' movement against climate change.
