The US Navy has been conducting regular drills called ICEX in the Arctic for generations. In recent times, the Navy has stepped up these efforts due to a host of moves by Russia and China because of the increasing importance of these regions. Between the combat exercises in the Arctic and the longstanding research facility in the Antarctic, the US is making a concerted effort to beef up its presence in both regions.
