We haven't been feeding the birds this winter- can't afford it, and luckily the weather has been mostly mild! Plus, there is lots of natural habitat here, so they find what they need. The other day, though, someone caved to the Chickadees' begging and served up some peanuts, raisins and cranberries. I don't advise generally feeding birds these human style foods (too pricey, anyway!!)- excess oils, probably some salt etc. However one day out of the winter doesn't worry me. The birds that showed up were the everpresent friendly Black-capped Chickadees Poecile atricapillus; the much less numerous Boreal Chickadee Poecile hudsonicus; and White-breasted Nuthatch Sitta carolinensis the more visible of the 2 Sitta species here. None showed any interest in the raisins/cranberries, I guess no Blue Jays or squirrels were paying attention! (a day or two later, the fruits were all gone, no tracks around, and the tray was not knocked down, so must have been some birds or other!)
