On 17 July 2014 around 13:30 UTC a popular Russian TV LifeNews aired this triumphant report of "another victory of Donetsk militia" which managed to "shoot down another Ukrainian military transport airplane". The report accurately described the events as seen by witnesses from the ground, that is a rocket hitting the aircraft, explosion, plume of smoke and then debris falling down "in the area of Torez" in Donbas. Half an hour later the first Russian reconnaissance teams arrived at the crash site and understood what they shot down was a Malaysian civilian aircraft MH17 flying from Netherlands. What happened next was the miracle of Russian propaganda - the same people who celebrated "another success of Donbas militia" now spoke as if nothing has happened, categorically denied shooting down any aircrafts and denied that they even had surface-to-air missiles at their disposal. Russian media made enormous, orchestrated effort to flood the public space with dozens of bizarre "alternative theories", from a provocation ("the plane transported already dead bodies") to Ukrainian Su-24 assault aicrafts that nobody saw chasing the civilian airliner through the skies only to shoot it down over the Russia-controlled Donbas. This effort partially worked - Russian audience and some Western as well ended up in the "we will never know the truth" limbo, confused by this "firehose of lies" tactics. The Netherlands aviation security commission and then criminal court however clearly established the sequence of events that led Russians to shot down the civilian aircraft, killing 298 people. Therefore, the more worth watching the original TV report where Russians initially for once told the truth about what they did, even if they were wrong about what their target was.
