So.... this could have gone a lot better if I had eaten more after my workout, but well, life goes on. I made it through. For the curious: https://www.strava.com/activities/13115708611
In any case, I discussed early music history and oral traditions, a tiny bit about the printing press and early copyright. I also discussed early electronic music and the demo scene...but it was all a bit rushed because...how do you talk about all of that in just an hour? I brought up the idea of maybe doing an extended series on the history but...idk.
In the end, I ended up spending a fair bit of time on netlabels and the history from 2010 onward, which is the history I know the most about.
A full history would have explored trademarks, the Berne Convention, and the WTO but I don't feel super bad about leaving that stuff out because people inherently get that you can't pretend to be someone else. It is, of course, ironic that I mostly accidentally ended up talking about a guy that is neither a Baroque composer nor the lead singer of Skid Row. The WTO might actually become more relevant to all of this if Trump decides to rip up all our global agreements and put tariffs on everybody, but that hasn't happened yet so it's fine to leave that for another day.
The band I couldn't remember was Oh Yeah, The Futures...which paired with my forgetfulness is a Who's on First skit waiting to happen (but I was right about the guy being Sebastian Bach): https://www.musicmanumit.com/2017/03/sa-bach-returns-170319-music-manumit.html
