Day 08

Rudiments are basic drumming figures inherited from military music. So many drum teachers have incorporated them into their practice that they now form part of the idiom of drumming, even in jazz. Alan Dawson had invented a rudimental ritual which contains exercises like this one : double strokes on the snare drum (two strokes on the right hand, then two on the left, then…) with a basic charley/bass drum accompaniment. The first four bars are played in 8th notes, then in triplets, then in 16th, then go down to triplets. To make things slightly funnier, I wend down to quarter notes triplets. (Scheuerell, page 55.)
