Cold Starting My 1966 VW Beetle

time2 yr agoview28 views

Helga is my 1966 VW Type 1 (Beetle). She has the original 1300 engine and runs great. In cold weather, she takes some finessing to start up, but once she's running, it's all good.

This is how to start Helga after she hasn't been run for a while:

  1. Turn the key to start. The engine may not catch the first time.
  2. If it doesn't catch, DO NOT continually crank the starter. Turn it off and try again.
  3. As you try to start, you can give the gas a very light feathering to prime the carb.
  4. When the engine catches, keep feathering the gas lightly to keep it going. Don't stomp the pedal all the way!
  5. After about 20-30 seconds, the clutch will open up fully and the engine should run without feathering the gas.

Drive slow to start, let the engine warm up a little.
