this song was completed before you're so precious came to be, but the art wasn't finalized until January 16th, 2024 so i held off on release until now. in hindsight, it turned out okay because i consider this track musically superior to the former, though both hold an equally special place in my heart for obvious reasons. plus, i got to give this one a final check and adjusted some small things in the mix that i think improves a lot. the main riff to this song was the very first thing i wrote on my keyboard when i bought a midi cable on a whim last year and installed a free synth plugin on my computer, not expecting much. the instrument had been sitting in my bedroom for over half a decade, unused. i took piano lessons when i was younger, but haven't touched the thing since and i wasn't even good back then so, as expected, i did and still do suck. though, i was able to write something special. it sounds that way to me, at least. i loaded up a synth sound i liked and just played around with it, eventually landing on this track's riff. from there, i think i wrote the rest in a few days, finishing most of it within the night, and while the art was being created, i wrote you're so precious and released it as the first cloudskater song instead. both because everything was completed sooner but also because i felt this one was a bit stronger from the beginning and releasing it second would make for a smoother progression. this song, like it's technically newer sibling, is pretty blatant in it's lyrics. i tend to pen words first, and then struggle to fit them all in once i make the song. in this case, i originally wrote 243 words for the song, intending it to have a typical verse, chorus, verse structure, but that didn't come to fruition and only a few lines from the original draft were brought over. also i totally stole the distorted drums idea from Sky Diver by Owl City, though mine are admittedly used in quite a different fashion. also also the beautiful artwork by Brittney Ackerman (thank you so much!) is based on a real life photo i took of my bedroom at eighteen past midnight on June 8th, 2022. i had a Switch Joy-Con charger that would glow green whenever the controllers were fully charged and it acted as a really cool nightlight while it had it up there. the original picture may or may not come with the download!
lyrics
[VERSE 1] And as I stare into my abyss It only serves to nullify these blissful Feelings in my belly and my chest Are falsified, they come from something less Than real
I don’t want to make this Any harder than it should be For I know, surely You’ll bring out the good in me
[BRIDGE] Come close, please stay Don’t go away We’re lost in space Our home, our place
