Since 2014 Russia portrayed Euromaidan as a kind of violent coup which had overthrown legitimate authorities, which was somehow supposed to justify Russian annexation of Crimea and starting war in Donbas. In reality, Euromaidan started on 21 November 2013 as peaceful political protest against president Yanykovych suddenly canceling the signing of association agreement with EU and instead entering customs association with Russia, whose economy was already in decline. The first weeks of Euromaidan portrayed on this video were dominated by young people, mostly students, waving EU flags, singing and delivering speeches. On 30 November however Yanukovuch gave an order to remove them from the square at any cost, which resulted in extremely brutal operation by "Berkut" riot police, who literally stamped on people, broke bones and beaten them with batons in spite of no resistance from the students. This beating was intended to scare the hell out of protesters and force them back home, which is tactics that usually worked in Russia. But here it had the opposite effect - people from all the country, this time adults outraged with regime brutality, came to Kyiv and started organising themselves in an unique resistance formations. Yanukovych, with advice from FSB who arrived to Kyiv in February 2014, tried the scare tactics once again, this time by issuing shoot to kill orders to snipers, who ultimately killed over 100 people during protests 19-22 February. Yanukovych, visibly shaken by the bloody outcome, agreed to negotiations and on 21 February an agreement was signed between him and the opposition leaders which peacefully ended the bloodshed and promised early elections. Apparently, Yanukovych never planned to keep it as on the same evening he left to Kharkiv, then to Donetsk, trying to find political allies but was rejected. On 23 February he tried to board a private jet flying to Moscow, but was stopped by Ukrainian border control, so on 24 February he was covertly evacuated by GRU helicopters which illegally crossed the border into Ukraine.
