In this tutorial I make a few very basic designs during a class to show students how to make neon patterns on using inkscape. We also cover how we could use the Makercase.com webapp to create boxes and then integrate those box designs into our neon patterns to hide electrodes and transformers creating elegant lamps.
All of this work can be done for free from the comfort of your own home, and the patterns can be printed off as Architectural blueprints at a local copy shop (or Staples). If you have access to a vinyl cutter, you can swap vinyl for a roll of paper and the blade for a marker or pen and create a drawing robot (plotter), to plot off your neon designs. Makercase files can be modified in Inkscape or sent straight off to folks with access to a laser cutter or CNC.
