On 13 January 2015 a massive barrage of "Grad" missiles hit the Ukrainian checkpoint in Volnovakha, where civilian buses were waiting for the entry into the territory controlled by the Russian armed forces pretending to be "Donetsk People's Republic". Based on impact craters analysis and available videos from the checkpoint the OSCE SMM established that the "Grads" were firing from north-north-west territory, controlled by Russia. HRW also inspected the craters and concluded that "both the target and the incoming direction of the attack indicate that the attack was launched from rebel-held territory". Russian "Grad" killed 12 and injured 18 civilians, mostly people waiting to enter the territory controlled by Russians.
