12 May 1997 Russia's president Yeltsin meets with Ichekria's president Maskhadov and signs a peace treaty between Russian Federation and Republic of Ichkeria (Chechnya) which ended the First Chechen War. It was called the First because only two years later Russia started the Second Chechen War, which ultimately crushed Ichkeria and replaced it with puppet government of Akhmat Kadyrov.
