100DaysOfPractice - Day 9 - Orchestration analysis on score (Grieg)

time6 mo agoview7 views

I studied a specific part of the orchestration analysis from yesterday : how the harmony is written for the orchestra. What I learned :

  • To achieve better balance of the chords, some voices can be lowered (by an octave).
  • Melodic motion is always privileged, especially if it doubles the main melody.
  • Clarinets, Horns and Bassoon are perfect for harmonic purpose.
  • It remains very similar to the 4 or 5 part harmonisation that we learn in school.
